The idea that poverty, relative backwardness, violence, and instability must be caused by external circumstances is engrained in much of the Western intelligentsia. It encourages a tendency to apologize for those regimes and radical groups which are the main cause of continued stagnation and suffering.
In fact, of course, the problems are very much-and [...]... Read more...

Turks of every political position tell me the same story to explain their situation: to cook a live frog you don’t put it in a pot on a high flame. You put it in cool water and raise the temperature very slowly. This is what’s happening in Turkey.
International media coverage of the July [...]... Read more...

"The Shrine of Democracy"
Yesterday Larry and I took his sister Joyce and bro-in-law Greg to see the sites so we began with Mt. Rushmore... It was a gorgeous day! We live about 35 miles from the monument. We also saw a lot of signs of Universal Studio new movie "National Treasure 2" being filmed in various places. The actual filming set was closed.
The presidents were selected on the basis of what each symbolized. George Washington represents the struggle for independence, Thomas Jefferson the idea of government by the people. Abraham Lincoln for his ideas on equality and the permanent union of the states, and Theodore Roosevelt for the 20th century role of the United States in world affairs. The carving of Mt. Rushmore actually began on August 10, 1927, and spanned a length of 14 years. Only about six and a half years were spent actually carving the mountain, with the rest of the time being spent on weather delays and the lack of funding. The total cost of the project was $900,000. Work continued on the project until the death of Gutzon Borglum in 1941. Mt. Rushmore is named after New York lawyer, Charles E. Rushmore who came to the Black Hills to investigate mining claims in 1885.
The Lakota Sioux called the mountain "Six Grandfathers". See tags for more names given the mountain by gold prospectors.... Read more...
