Lawyers for Civil Liberties
The National Lawyers Guild was formed in the early 1930's and is considered the most Progressive national lawyers association in the United States. Known for its strong stance on the protection of civil liberties and civil rights, the National Lawyers Guild was instrumental in fighting anti-lynching laws during the early 1930's, was responsible for writing much of the legislation of the New Deal, and, unlike the American Bar Association, which was against the New Deal and excluded non-whites from its organization, the Guild, from its formation, welcomed members that were non-whites.During the anti-communist scare of the McCarthy era in the late 1940's and early 1950's, the National Lawyers Guild refused to purge its membership of lawyers who embraced communist ideology and, still, to this day, does not purge members for political affiliations.From its formation, the Guild has been at the forefront of rights and protections for workers and has many high profile cases archived at the New York Tamiment Library and Robert Wagner Labor Archives, regarding cases involving labor law.The National Lawyers Guild, unlike the American Bar Association, allows all legal workers employed in the field of law to become a member. There is no requirement that a Guild member be a lawyer.The National Lawyers Guild was also involved in many cases involving the anti-war movement of the Vietnam era.In 2006, Marjorie Cohen became the Guild's first woman president.
